Safety
Public Safety In The Big City
Atlanta is the entertainment and cultural center of the South with more than 20 million visitors arriving each year to experience the attractions, culture and entertainment that is abundant in Atlanta. With all of the excitement surrounding your trip to our city, we do want to remind you of some traveler safety tips that should be followed wherever your travels may take you.

Ambassador Force

The city of Atlanta provides a uniformed, non-police force to assist visitors with directions, hotel and restaurant information and general tourist information. (See picture of uniformed officer) The ambassadors are on duty from 6:00 am until midnight every day of the week. They staff a tourist information booth at the corner of Peachtree Street and Andrew Young International Boulevard. In addition to having officers working areas on foot, they also have four officers patrolling the ISEF area on bicycles. An ISEF attendee will seldom walk more than a block without seeing an ambassador. Ambassador Force-http://www.atlantadowntown.com/Ambassador.asp Ambassadors

Panhandlers
Atlanta, as in most cities of any size, has a population of homeless and panhandlers. It is likely that an attendee at the Intel ISEF will be approached as they move from their hotel to various event locations with requests for financial contributions. These individuals, quite often will present imaginative and compelling stories as to why they need your money. The city of Atlanta offers the homeless and persons in need multiple levels of support including housing, food and other necessities. The ambassadors suggest that when attendees are approached by panhandlers, that they continue to walk toward their destination by politely saying “No”. Any conversation beyond a simple “No” is perceived by the panhandler as encouragement. In the rare situation where the panhandler persists on accompanying you as you walk, the attendee may simply signal a nearby ambassador. As mentioned above, ambassadors are stationed every block or two along the recommended walking pathways. (See above)A common panhandler strategy is to volunteer assistance with directions. The ambassadors recommend that attendees politely refuse this offer of assistance. One of the purposes of the ambassadors is to provide information and directions to nearby restaurants, hotels, and other neighborhood venues.

Street Safety

  • When possible, travel with another person when sightseeing or shopping, particularly at night.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. Do not feel embarrassed to leave an uncomfortable situation.
  • Walk with purpose and project an assertive and business-like image. Criminals will be discouraged if you do not appear vulnerable or easily intimidated.
When asking for directions, first look for a police officer or another public employee (i.e., bus driver), or go into a nearby business.
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash. Use traveler's checks and debit cards. Keep a record of traveler's check numbers, credit card numbers, photocopy of passport and other valuable documents separate from originals.
  • If you must carry a large amount of cash, separate it from your purse or wallet and carry it inside clothing (i.e., in a hidden pocket or a money belt).
  • Be careful and alert when cashing traveler's checks, or using a cash machine. Never let someone see how much money you have in your wallet, or where you keep your money.
  • Don't wear expensive jewelry and watches when out sightseeing. If you must wear it, wear it inside your clothing.
  • Pickpockets are often attracted to crowded places. They often work in teams of two or three; one may create a distraction while the other one lifts your wallet. Be aware of someone who bumps, shoves or gets too close.
  • Don't tempt a thief by leaving your purse or wallet unattended. It only takes a second to grab it.
  • Learn to carry your purse or wallet safely. Purses should be closed, held in front of your body, with your arm across it. Wallets should be carried a front pants pocket or in an interior jacket pocket.

Hotel Safety
  • Don’t answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who it is. If a person claims to be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.
  • When returning to your hotel or motel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel. Be observant and look around before entering parking lots.
  • Close the door securely whenever you are in your room and use all of the locking devices provided.
  • Don’t needlessly display guestroom keys or convention badges in public.
  • Don’t invite strangers to your room.
  • Place all valuables in the hotel or motel’s safe deposit box.
  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • Check to see that any sliding glass doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked.
  • If you see any suspicious activity, please report your observations to the management.
