Volunteer to Judge at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)

For the first time in history, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) will be in Atlanta the week of May 11-16.  This is really an honor and a privilege for our community.  In order to provide quality judging to these 1500 young scholars from every state in our nation and from approximately 50 nations we need about 900 scientific judges .To be a judge at this event one needs to hold a M.D., PhD in the judging category or to have a minimum of six years of professional work experience in the respective category.    Please assist us in finding volunteers to register to be a judge for this important event.  Approximately 20 percent of the participants at the Intel ISEF either hold patents or have patents pending relative to their research.  Judges will be expected to report to the Georgia World Congress Center on Tuesday afternoon, May 13, arriving no later than 5:00 pm.  Judges will begin their work that evening.  Judges are to arrive at the Congress Center for an early breakfast on Wednesday morning and will work all day until their work is completed.  Specific needs in the areas of judges are as follows:

Grand Awards Judges are experienced professionals who volunteer their time to evaluate the projects of all participants in the 17 categories. They represent Intel ISEF and select the winners of the top awards presented by the fair in each category. Grand Awards Judges are required to have either (1) a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree or (2) a bachelors or masters degree and a minimum of six years of professional experience in a scientific discipline related to one of the 17 project categories. Judges may include university faculty, industrial scientists and engineers, representatives of private and federal research centers and agencies, and medical researchers. Affiliated science fair directors, ISEF Official Party members, and elementary or secondary teachers are not eligible to judge.

Grand Awards Judges are expected to be available during the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, May 13 and all day on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 to complete their judging assignments. To apply, please complete the on-line application. You will receive an email confirmation that your application has been received. After your application is reviewed by the Atlanta Judging Committee, typically within 4-6 weeks, you will be informed by e-mail of your status. If you are approved as a judge, you will receive emails and printed materials during the months prior to the fair to help you prepare for the judging process.

Apply Now to be a Grand Awards Judge

When applying, judges are asked to identify their primary area of expertise
(
category and subcategory). Generally, judges will be asked to review projects covering a range of topics within their assigned category, since detailed familiarity with a specific subfield is not essential in evaluating most aspects of the projects. You also have the option to identify a second category in which you are qualified and willing to judge, since your background may include multiple scientific/technical fields or your specialty, such as propulsion systems or bioinformatics, may span more than one of the 17 Intel ISEF categories. However, identification of a second category is not required and, in most instances, judges will be assigned to their primary category.

More Information about Judging at ISEF 2008

In addition to the grand awards, each year over 70 professional organizations, representing a wide variety of scientific disciplines, affiliate with the Intel ISEF as Special Awards sponsors. These governmental, industrial and educational institutions present scholarships, plaques, summer internships, scientific field trips, subscriptions to professional journals, books, and equipment grants to winners at the Intel ISEF. Special Awards Judges are recruited by the sponsoring organizations to choose the winners of their awards. If your organization is interested in sponsoring a special award, please contact: Katrina Miller - kmiller@clayton.k12.ga.us , Will Huang - william.huang@target.com, or Diane Rashid drashid@sciserv.org for additional information.
