Educational Outreach at
the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2008

ISEF 2008 Visitation Day

The International Science Fair will be held in Atlanta the week of May 11, 2008.  We would like to offer an opportunity for students in your system to attend the Educational Outreach Day on May 15, 2008.  This is the day following the judging.  The exhibit hall, with students by projects will be open to the public that day.

The Atlanta Host Committee would like to offer three types of field trips to your students.

1. Metro Area Structured Field Trip is intended for students in the middle years, grades 5-9. Numbers of students participating in this program must be controlled and each school system in the Atlanta Metro Area has been allotted a specific number of classes to attend.  These trips will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue through 12:30 p.m.  During this trip, students will hear from former ISEF winners from GA, have a structured visit to the exhibit hall, hear from current scientists doing research, and participate in a science activity provided by various science educational programs from around the state.  This educational “hands on” field trip will take approximately two hours.  Please contact your school systems’ science supervisor for application forms.  The deadline for return of the forms is February 9, 2008.  After that date any unused allocations will be redistributed.  Please indicate on the forms you submit any classes you would like to add to a waiting list.  Teachers will receive confirmation and a pre-visit packet  by March 10, 2008.  If you have questions please contact: Faatimah_A_Muhammad@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us.  Metro Systems are Atlanta, Buford, Clayton, Cobb, Decatur, Dekalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Marietta, Rockdale,

2.  Self Guided Field Trip is an open invitation to visit the exhibits during the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  There will be some materials available at the door for teachers to use to help guide students through the exhibit hall.  Any member of the public, including teachers, is welcome to come and see the projects and interview the students first hand.  You will not need to make any prior arrangements with us to attend.  Simply set up the field trip within your system.

 3.  The Virtual Field Trip will be provided at the GA ISEF web site that day.  It will include the interviews with prior GA ISEF winners, some interviews with students on the exhibit hall floor, and some interviews with research scientists.  This trip will be available that day, and be archived for use later with classes, should a teacher wish to use it.

Thank you for your work organizing these trips.  The Georgia Department of Education has given their support for these educational opportunities.  This should facilitate the release of Georgia students for a field trip at a date so close to the end of the school year.  We hope your system can fully take advantage of these opportunities.  This is a unique chance for the students in Georgia to see in person the level and quality of research that students are capable of doing.  Perhaps it will inspire our students to see science as an exciting and attainable career.
